The children at Kingfield Primary School in Chatteris have been celebrating Modern British culture this week with a range of activities. Attending school dressed in Red, White and Blue, the children took part in Traditional Maypole Dancing, made Union Jack Flags, learned about British traditions, researched the Royal Family as well as studying the work of the British Government and the structure of Parliament. At lunchtime the children enjoyed traditional ‘Pie and Mash’ and ‘Jelly with Ice-Cream’ for pudding!
Headteacher Joanne Tomlins said: We have identified that many of our children are not familiar with Modern British Culture and how diverse Britain has become over the years. We feel it is important for the children to understand the changes in order to embrace these and make sense of the world around them. I particularly enjoyed listening to the children singing the National Anthem, it felt like Last Night of the Proms! I’d like to say a huge thank you also to RPM Painting and Decorating Services in St Neots for kindly donating their time to decorate our Journey Through Britain’ corridor, the children love it!
Classteacher Laura Barnes who organised the day said: We had a fantastic time celebrating British Traditions and values today, the children loved taking part in so many different activities. I’m looking forward to building on the success of today by planning another cultural day for next term.
Shannon Campbell (Yr5) said: In our class we had to pick a political leader and write our own speeches. Mine was about what I would do to improve Chatteris.
Harry Powley (Yr5) said: We had to go around the corridors in our parties and find out facts about ourselves. At the end, my party managed to get the most members so we won!
