Children at a Chatteris primary school can enjoy time travel every time they walk down a corridor thanks to a new initiative. Joanne Tomlins, head at Kingsfield School, showed me the newly decorated walls of the school’s long corridor when I paid a visit recently. She explained the corridor was dark and dingy and uninspiring for pupils, so they came up with a scheme to decorate it highlighting Britain through the ages.
The first phase, which was completed on a voluntary basis by local painter and decorator Rob Mahoney, shows modern Britain and features murals from the capital including the Houses of Parliament. Eventually the corridor will cover other eras including the First World War and work is set to start on creating a trench on the wall shortly. It is anticipated the corridor will eventually be decorated with images going back to at least the Tudor period, taking in the Victorian industrial revolution in passing.
“We wanted it to be more interactive, we are creating an interesting backdrop that is a useful learning space rather than just a dingy corridor. It will be like the children are travelling through time when the walk down it. The children have been doing a lot of work on modern Britain and British culture including talking about Parliament and this is being displayed along the corridor,” said Mrs Tomlins.
It was great to visit the school and to chat with the children about the new corridor and to hear about what they have learned on Britain and our culture. The murals are very eye-catching and I’m sure the pupils will enjoy seeing them as they walk past.
