Despite the snow, Year 3 enjoyed an action-packed Stone Age Day on Tuesday. The children, dressed in earthy coloured clothes reminiscent of the era, took part in a variety of activities throughout the day. The pupils enjoyed learning how to make fire the Stone Age way with the school caretaker, Mr Stanbridge who was able to easily extinguish the fire using the snow! The children were then visited by ‘Fossils Galore’ who shared some artefacts including a Woolly Rhino’s leg bone. The children learnt some great facts about how Stone Age people lived as well as how fossils are formed. Finally in the afternoon the children separated into 3 groups; The Woolly Mammoths, The Sabre Toothed Tigers and the Woolly Rhinos and took part in round robin of activities: cave painting (having made the paint the Stone Age way earlier), making poetry writing stones and Stone Age necklace making (having made the clay ‘bone’ jewels earlier).
Kai (Year 3) said: I enjoyed holding all of the fossils, especially the animal teeth and bones. There was a big bone that was smooth and really heavy.”
Phoebe (Year 3) said: I enjoyed finding out how the stone-age people lived and finding out what sort of animals lived in the stone age, including buffalo.
Year 3 teacher, Helen Rhodes said: It was fantastic to see the children really engaged in the activities, especially with our very own caretaker lighting fires the Stone Age Way. We had a fabulous day.
