Following a £3.4m refurbishment of the old infant school site on Green End Road Chesterton Primary Academy opened on the 4th September with its first reception class of 30 pupils. This follows a decision made by Cambridgeshire County Council in October 2012 to establish a new primary school to help meet growing demand for places in the local area. At capacity the Academy will provide places for 210 pupils aged 4-11 and will also offer provision for the early years. Chesterton Primary Academy is sponsored by Active Learning Trust. The Active Learning Trust is a non-profit making charitable trust that currently sponsors two other schools in Cambridgeshire and two in Suffolk. Chief Executive Clive Bush says: ‘We were delighted to be given the opportunity to open the new school in Cambridge and through our partnership with Cambridgeshire Local Authority, I am pleased to say the project has gone extremely well. The school opened on time to brilliant new facilities and our first class of pupils are settled in and seem very happy’. The new school will be lead by Headteacher Bryony Surtees who arrives from Bucklesham in Suffolk. Bryony said: "For me this is an exciting and unique opportunity to grow a school from its beginnings to become an outstanding school that both children and parents want to come to. I was keen to work with the Active Learning Trust because they are very student centred and for me this should be at the heart of every good school."
