Students at the newly opened Chantry Academy, part of the Active Learning Trust, have been collecting clothes, tinned food and toiletries for the refugee appeal in Calais.

Reverend Hinsley, Rector of the South West Ipswich Ministry Team, took part in a mission to Calais on Sunday 4th October.  The goods collected by Year 8 students formed part of the huge amount of donations taken by the Ipswich appeal.

“The students have been incredible, spending hours after school sorting through the fantastic donations from both students and parents,” said Head of Year 8 Katy Morrow.  “It has really taught them about how difficult life is for some people.”

Reverend Hinsley said:

“The response to the refugee crisis in Calais is born out of a response by ordinary people to what they have seen.

“The young people of Year 8 at Chantry Academy in Ipswich have made a powerful demonstration of care and concern to those in need, recognising that they are first and foremost our brothers and sisters in need of help.

“We are proud that they have been able to help us to help the refugees in Calais.  On behalf of all who have been organising this trip, thank you, you are a credit to your school and to the young people of Ipswich.”

Craig D’Cunha, Principal of Chantry Academy, said:

“I’m always amazed at how our students respond to support those in need. The students wanted to be part of this event, and this demonstrates their compassion, empathy and understanding. I’m so proud of their determination to help others.”
